Combat in Hytale consists of 4 categories: melee, ranged, magic, and defense. In this article, we'll explore how each of these categories work, and dive into a high-level overview of weapon/armor statistics and tooltips.
Basics
While in-game, you're fastest method of understanding an item is to hover over it in your inventory and inspect the tooltip. Let's look at an example:

Here we see the tooltip for a Fire Sword. The tooltip shows:
- The item name (Fire Sword)
- The rarity (Epic)
- The hit range (22-29 with an average damage per second of 25.79)
- The attack speed (slow)
- A list of the enchantment effects (Enemies hit have a chance to be set on fire)
- The item type (2-hand sword)
- The item durability (70/70 - where the first 70 decreases when the item is used, and the second 70 reminds you of the maximum durability)
Types of weapons
Drugoy has a great video on the topic of weapons in Hytale. In short, it features:
- 27 swords ranging from copper and cobalt to thorium and runic. Swords are balanced melee weapons that offer a mix of speed and damage.
- 3 clubs used for heavy-hitting melee attacks, often with a focus on stunning or knocking back enemies.
- 4 sledgehammers designed for powerful melee strikes, typically slower but dealing significant damage.
- 5 Axes that provide a balance between speed and damage, often with special abilities to cleave through multiple enemies.
- 9 Battle Axes that are heavier and deal more damage than standard axes, often at the cost of speed.
- 3 Maces that focus on blunt force trauma, effective against armored foes.
- 4 Spears that allow for quick thrusting attacks and can be used for both melee and ranged combat.
- 11 Shields that offer defensive capabilities, allowing players to block incoming attacks and reduce damage taken.
- 5 Bows that allow for ranged attacks, enabling players to strike enemies from a distance with precision.
- 11 Wizard Staffs that channel magical energy for casting spells and ranged magical attacks.
- 3 Magic Books that provide a variety of hand-casted magical abilities and enhancements.
We have also seen gameplay utilizing weapons such as daggers, crossbows, thrown bombs, and pitchforks, so we can expect a diverse array of weapon types in Hytale.
⚔️ Melee
Melee is a form of close-range combat that involves direct physical attacks using weapons such as swords, axes, and maces. It requires players to be in close proximity to their targets and often involves a combination of timing, positioning, and skill to effectively land hits and defend against incoming attacks.
Below is an example video of some PvP gameplay; It features first- and third-person combat utilizing melee, ranged, and defense, but focuses heavily on melee.

🏹 Ranged
Ranged combat allows players to attack enemies from a distance using weapons such as bows, crossbows, and thrown projectiles. This form of combat emphasizes accuracy, timing, and strategic positioning to effectively hit targets while minimizing exposure to enemy attacks.
🧙‍♂️ Magic
Magic combat involves the use of spells and magical abilities to attack, defend, or support allies. Players can harness various types of magic, such as elemental spells (fire, ice, lightning), healing spells, and buffs/debuffs, to gain an advantage in combat situations. Mastery of magic often requires understanding spell mechanics, mana management, and strategic application in battle.
By studying the iconography of Hytale's official concept art, we can identify six elemental schools of magic that can be utilized in combat:

Hytale Concept Art - Iconography
- Water - We anticipate water magic to involve healing and restorative abilities, as well as ice-based offensive spells that can slow or freeze enemies.
- Earth - Earth magic is likely to focus on defensive and protective spells, such as creating barriers or enhancing armor, as well as offensive abilities that manipulate the ground or summon rock-based attacks.
- Wind - Wind magic may involve speed and agility enhancements, as well as offensive spells that utilize gusts of wind to knock back or disorient enemies.
- Fire - Fire magic is expected to center around offensive spells that deal damage over time, such as burning effects, as well as area-of-effect attacks that can incinerate multiple foes.
- Lighting - Lightning magic is likely to focus on high-damage, single-target spells that can stun or paralyze enemies, as well as chain lightning attacks that can hit multiple targets.
- Void - Void magic may involve dark or shadow-based abilities that can debilitate enemies, drain health or mana, and manipulate space or time for strategic advantages.
🛡️ Defense
Defense encompasses the various methods and strategies players can use to protect themselves from enemy attacks. This includes the use of armor, shields, and defensive abilities or spells that can mitigate damage, block incoming attacks, or provide buffs to increase survivability in combat situations.
